Because the library is on the ground floor and only has two windows, it is both out of the way and dark. Its location also demands load-bearing pillars and an electrical panel (next to the circulation desk) that make visibility difficulty and cut off flow. The fire exit hallway is a dead space that has beautiful wooden shelves that are hardly used. The room that could be used as a classroom is full of technology equipment.
The library currently has many unlovely aspects, including suspended ceilings and large hanging fluorescent lights that make stacks look crowded and offer inconsistent lighting. The largest feature is the worn and stained 1970s-era rug, which has a slight mildew smell and turns everything the color of watery lentils. The celings are of a reasonable height in the two main "rooms," almost eleven feet, but lower in the center hallway, a little over eight feet.
The library currently has 20 computers, but they are somewhat antiquated and do not support the latest browsers and software. There is no projector or screen for presenting or teaching. The library does have its own WiFi router and lots of electrical drops in the pillars and on the north wall. The library also has a circulation system already in place (Via). For furniture, there are some nice maple tables, matching chairs and sturdy shelves. There are no display racks; all displays are ad-hoc creations.
The library has not had a budget to invest in books, but needs to replace and grow both fiction and nonfiction titles to provide up-to-date, relevant, and desirable books and resources.
Right now, one class could meet in the library. There is not sufficient room or equipment for teaching, presentations, or gatherings.
